Hardware product gross margin is the portion of device revenue a company keeps after paying the direct cost of making and shipping those devices. In accounting terms it is net product sales minus cost of sales for products, divided by net product sales. The cost-of-sales line for hardware bundles materials, contract-manufacturing fees, inbound and outbound freight, manufacturing overhead, inventory write-downs, and estimated warranty cost. What is left is the gross margin, and it sits at the top of the income statement, before research, sales, and administrative spending. Because it isolates the unit economics of the physical product, it is the first number a hardware-business reader checks.

Apple discloses products and services gross margin separately, which makes the contrast unusually clean. In the Management's Discussion and Analysis of its fiscal 2025 Form 10-K (for the year ended September 27, 2025), Apple reported products gross margin of $112,887 million and services gross margin of $82,314 million, for total gross margin of $195,201 million. As percentages, the filing states products at 36.8%, services at 75.4%, and the company total at 46.9%.

The roughly 38-point gap between a 36.8% product margin and a 75.4% services margin is the reason consumer-tech filings break the two apart. A device is a high-cost-of-goods business: every iPhone carries a bill of materials, assembly cost, and freight that consume most of the price. A service — a subscription, a store fee, a licensing payment — carries almost no incremental cost once the platform exists, so its margin runs far higher. When a company says hardware is the entry point and services are where the money is, the gross-margin table is the evidence.

What moves the product number

Apple's filing attributes year-over-year movement in products gross margin to specific, named drivers rather than to a single cause. The fiscal 2025 MD&A states that products gross margin increased "primarily due to favorable costs and a different mix of products, partially offset by tariff costs," while the products gross margin percentage decreased "primarily due to a different mix of products and tariff costs, partially offset by other favorable costs." Three forces recur in hardware-margin commentary: input and component costs, product mix (a quarter weighted toward higher-priced Pro models lifts the average), and trade or tariff costs that raise the landed cost of goods. Foreign-exchange movement is a fourth: the same 10-K notes that gross margins on products built with foreign-sourced components can be affected by exchange-rate fluctuations.

Two cautions matter when reading the figure. First, product gross margin is a GAAP measure of direct cost only; it says nothing about the research and operating spend required to design the device, which lives lower on the income statement. A high gross margin can still sit above a thin operating margin. Second, mix can move the percentage without any change in the underlying economics of a single product — a heavier weighting toward premium units raises the blended number even if every individual device costs the same to build. Apple's own language, crediting "a different mix of products," is the reminder to read the percentage alongside what was actually sold.

Products versus services, and the blended number

Because the two margins are so far apart, the company-wide "total gross margin" percentage is a weighted average that drifts with the revenue mix between them. Apple's fiscal 2025 total gross margin of 46.9% rose from 46.2% in 2024 and 44.1% in 2023, and the filing's own figures show why: services gross margin climbed from 70.8% in 2023 to 73.9% in 2024 to 75.4% in 2025, while products gross margin moved within a narrower band (36.5%, 37.2%, 36.8%). When a faster-growing, higher-margin services line takes a larger share of total revenue, the blended company margin rises even if the product margin is flat. This is the mechanical reason a hardware company's overall profitability can improve without the device business itself getting more profitable. A reader who looks only at the total number can miss that the improvement came from mix, not from better hardware economics.

The dollar figures matter as much as the percentages. Apple's fiscal 2025 products gross margin of $112,887 million is the larger of the two in absolute terms, even though services carries the higher percentage, because product revenue is a much bigger base. Services gross margin of $82,314 million is closing the gap, having grown from $60,345 million in 2023. The two-way view — percentage and dollars, products and services — is what separates an analyst's read from a headline. A percentage tells you the efficiency of a unit of revenue; the dollars tell you how much profit the segment actually contributes. For a device business, both lines move together over a hardware cycle: a strong launch lifts product gross-margin dollars first, then feeds the attached services that lift the higher-margin line in the quarters after.

Why the disclosure exists

Companies report cost of sales, and therefore gross margin, under U.S. securities rules that require a registrant to present results of operations and discuss the material drivers of changes in revenue and cost. Splitting products from services is a presentation choice that Apple and other consumer-hardware companies have adopted because the two lines behave so differently that a blended margin would obscure both. For a reader, the practical use is straightforward: the product gross-margin percentage measures the durable profitability of the hardware itself, the services margin measures the attached business, and the spread between them — 36.8% versus 75.4% in Apple's fiscal 2025 filing — is the clearest single statement of where a device company actually earns.
